Is it better to go via Hanoi or travel direct?
Both options are possible, but here are some things to consider before deciding:
- The journey is long either way — at least 7.5 to 9 hours.
- You’ll pass Hanoi anyway. Even direct buses must go through Hanoi, there’s no shortcut.
- Most cruises already include a drop-off in Hanoi. The first leg of the journey may already be covered.
- Going via Hanoi feels more relaxed. You get time to enjoy a meal, take a break, or even stay overnight before continuing to Sapa.
- Going direct saves time but means doing the entire trip in one go. Some travelers are fine with that, others find it exhausting.
- The only way to take the sleeper train to Sapa is by going via Hanoi. Trains don’t run from Halong.
- Bus comfort varies. Direct buses are sleeper-style, but not everyone enjoys long hours in a bus seat — consider if that suits you.
→ If comfort matters more, go via Hanoi. If saving time is your priority, direct options work.
Pro tip: Halong Bay + Sapa combo tour with all transfers arranged
If you don’t want to figure out how to connect Halong Bay and Sapa yourself, there’s an easier way — just book a combo tour that includes both.
These tours use the best and most recommended transport options, with everything fully arranged door to door — from Hanoi to Halong Bay, from Halong Bay to Sapa, and back to Hanoi.
You won’t need to worry about finding buses, booking trains, or arranging private cars. All transfers, hotels, the cruise, and trekking are organized for you in one smooth itinerary.
Option 1: Via Hanoi (Recommended)
How this option works
After finishing your cruise, you can take the included shuttle back to Hanoi (or book a private transfer if you prefer). From Hanoi, continue to Sapa the same day or the next day, depending on your schedule.
Why this is the best option
- More comfortable: You get a break in Hanoi to rest, have a proper meal (instead of local restaurant along the highway), or do some quick sightseeing even.
- Better transport options. From Hanoi you have:
- More sleeper bus options: More departure times and companies compared to direct buses from Halong Bay.
- Sleeper train option: Safer and more comfortable than buses, with tourist train options that offer better beds and amenities.
- Feels less exhausting: The long journey is broken into two manageable parts instead of one long haul.

Option 2: Direct bus from Halong Bay to Sapa
How this option works
Buses leave directly from Halong Bay (harbour area, usually Tuan Chau) to Sapa. These buses are specifically timed for cruise passengers, with departures shortly after all overnight cruises return to the harbour around 11:00 AM.
It’s a good option if you want to save time without transferring in Hanoi, but be prepared — it’s a long bus trip of 7 to 9 hours.
Departure options:
- Midday: Around 12:00 PM, perfectly timed for guests who disembark from their 2-day, 1-night (or 3-day, 2-night) Halong Bay cruises.
- Arrival in Sapa: Between 7 PM and 9 PM.
- Evening: Between 8 PM and 10 PM.
- Arrival in Sapa: Between 3 AM and 5 AM.
- Some bus companies allow you to stay on board until sunrise after arriving in Sapa (around 5:30–6 AM), which can save the cost of a hotel for that night.
- If the bus doesn’t offer this, you will need to arrange early check-in or pay for an extra night at your hotel in Sapa. This is especially important if you arrive as early as 3:00 AM.
Bus types:
- Standard sleeper bus: Reclining bunk-style seats — basic but functional.
- VIP limousine sleeper: Fewer seats, more space, USB charging, and more comfort — well worth the small extra cost if your budget allows.

Prices:
- From 450,000 to 700,000 VND (~$18–28 USD) depending on bus type and comfort level.
Route note:
- While it’s called a “direct bus from Halong Bay to Sapa,” the route still passes through Hanoi via the express highway. There is no route that skips Hanoi, but you don’t need to change buses — it’s just part of the driving route.
Pros:
- Direct — no transfers needed.
- Saves time for travelers going straight from a Halong Bay cruise to Sapa.
Cons:
- A long journey in one stretch.
- Fewer bus options than traveling via Hanoi.
How to book these buses
- The easiest way to book is online via Vexere — a local Vietnamese booking platform with the most comprehensive bus listings.
- Another option is 12Go Asia — more tourist-friendly and available in English, but sometimes with fewer options than Vexere.
- Booking at least 1–2 days in advance is highly recommended, especially for midday departures that align with cruise arrivals.
Option 3: Private car with driver
How the private car option works
A private car with driver is the most flexible and comfortable way to travel from Halong Bay to Sapa. It’s a door-to-door service, meaning you’ll be picked up directly at the harbour (Tuan Chau or Bai Chay) after your cruise and dropped off at your hotel in Sapa.
This option gives you the freedom to leave whenever you want and stop for food, coffee, or bathroom breaks as needed. It’s particularly convenient for families, small groups, or anyone who values privacy and comfort.
Important consideration:
- It’s still a long drive — at least 8 hours including a short break.
- If you start right after your cruise (around noon), expect to arrive in Sapa in the evening.
- A more relaxed alternative is to use your cruise’s transfer back to Hanoi, stay overnight, and then take a private car to Sapa the next morning. This splits the journey into two easier parts.

Bring snacks and drinks early
If you’re taking the direct bus, it’s smart to buy snacks and drinks before your cruise starts. After disembarking, you’ll have very little time to shop before the bus leaves.
Break the trip for comfort
If your schedule allows, return to Hanoi first. Enjoy a meal, stay overnight, and head to Sapa the next day. The journey feels much easier and less rushed.
