Itinerary

Your local guide will meet you at your homestay to get ready for the overnight trek. The day begins with a gentle hike through Ba Be’s peaceful countryside — think rice paddies, small rivers, and jungle paths. You’ll pass local farms and greet villagers along the way with a friendly “Xin chào!”

After a couple of hours, the terrain shifts — the path heads uphill and into denser jungle. It’s not too technical, but the climb is a bit more challenging and requires basic fitness. At the top, catch your breath and take in the views before continuing on a mix of up-and-down jungle trails.

You'll reach a small village school where it’s time for a well-earned break and a local-style picnic lunch, likely prepared by villagers. It’s a simple but scenic spot to rest and recharge for the next leg.

Lunch

The final stretch takes 2–3 hours through more remote jungle terrain. It’s one of the most stunning parts of the route, with rugged paths and quiet forest all around. Eventually, you’ll reach the campsite for the night. Set up your hammock, enjoy a BBQ dinner, and toast the day with some “happy water” (Vietnamese rice wine).

Dinner
Camping

After a night in the hammock, wake up surrounded by the sounds of nature. Breakfast is served outdoors before you pack up and begin your trek out of the jungle. The hike takes about three hours and brings you to the shores of Ba Be Lake.

Breakfast

A motorboat will be waiting to take you across the lake toward Dau Dang Waterfall. On the way, enjoy views of limestone cliffs, quiet villages, and jungle scenery along the Nang River.

You’ll stop at a local riverside restaurant for lunch — a relaxed and filling break before heading back to town.

Lunch

After lunch, switch from motorboat to kayak for a peaceful paddle along Ba Be Lake. You’ll glide past buffalo cooling off in the water and locals going about their daily life. After the paddle, you return to the Ba Be base to end the tour.

  • The Ba Be Lake tour runs year-round, but the best time to join is from March to May or September to November when the weather is dry and pleasant. Avoiding peak rainy season ensures easier hiking conditions.
  • Wear light, breathable clothes for trekking, and sturdy walking shoes with good grip. A hat, long sleeves, and a raincoat are useful in both sun and wet conditions.
  • There’s no internet in the jungle or on the lake. We recommend bringing a Vietnamese SIM card for coverage in more developed areas, but expect to unplug during the tour.
  • Leave large suitcases at your accommodation or our base. Bring a small daypack with essentials for the hike and overnight stay. Dry bags are provided for water protection.
  • Vegetarian and allergy-friendly meals can be arranged — just let us know in advance. All meals are prepared fresh using local ingredients.
  • Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, a refillable water bottle, a flashlight or headlamp, toiletries, and a change of clothes for after the trek.
  • One night is spent in a jungle hammock camp. Basic but memorable — sleeping under the stars with the sounds of nature around you. Clean gear is provided.

FAQ

How fit do I need to be for this tour?

You should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven terrain, including uphill sections. The hike isn’t extreme, but basic fitness is needed. If you’re unsure, we can adjust the pace or provide alternatives.

Is kayaking difficult or dangerous?

No experience is needed. The waters are calm, and your guide will provide instructions and a life jacket. It’s a relaxing and fun way to explore Ba Be Lake.

Are there leeches or dangerous animals in the jungle?

Leeches can appear during the rainy season, especially near wet areas. Long pants and repellent help avoid them. Dangerous wildlife is very rare, and your guide knows the area well.

Can the itinerary be customized?

Yes! If you’re traveling with a group or have specific preferences (like skipping the overnight in the jungle), we can adjust the route and accommodation — just contact us in advance.

How do I get to Ba Be Lake from Hanoi?

Ba Be is about 4-5 hours by car or minibus from Hanoi. We can help arrange transport or recommend the best way depending on your budget and travel plans.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Due to the jungle hiking and overnight camping, this tour is better suited for older children or teens who are active and used to outdoor activities. Contact us if you're traveling with young kids — we may be able to adapt it.

Are there toilets or showers at the campsite?

Facilities are very basic. There may be a makeshift toilet nearby, but there are no showers. We recommend bringing wet wipes and your own toiletries for comfort.

What kind of wildlife might I see?

Ba Be National Park is home to birds, butterflies, monkeys, and more. Wildlife sightings aren’t guaranteed, but you’ll definitely hear plenty of jungle sounds along the way.

Can I combine this tour with other destinations?

Absolutely. Ba Be is a great addition to a northern Vietnam itinerary, especially if you’re also visiting Cao Bang, Ha Giang, or Hanoi. Let us know your plans, and we can help connect the routes.
