To Mai Chau
The best way to reach Mai Chau is by limousine buses that offer a convenient and comfortable ride from Hanoi’s Old Quarter directly to your accommodation in Mai Chau. The journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and costs around 250,000 VND ($10–12 USD). These vans feature spacious, comfortable seats, making them ideal for the journey.
Alternatively, you can hire a private car for more flexibility, allowing you to stop at the Thung Khe Pass, which offers stunning views of the Mai Chau Valley. While there is little sightseeing along the way, this viewpoint is a notable highlight.
To Hoa Binh Lake
For accommodations around Hoa Binh Lake, take a bus to Hoa Binh City, located at the start of the lake near the dam. From there, you can hire a taxi to your accommodation along the lake. Keep in mind that depending on where you stay, it may still be a considerable drive from the city, as the lake is vast.
Rural areas
If your destination is in the more remote, rural parts of Hoa Binh, such as lesser-explored villages or areas far from Mai Chau or Hoa Binh City, arranging a private driver directly from Hanoi is often the best option. Getting around

However, keep in mind that cars with drivers are not widely available in Mai Chau, so it’s essential to book in advance, ideally a few days before your trip.
- Motorbike/Scooter: While not widely available at rental shops, scooters can often be rented from homestays, even if you’re not staying there. Pu Luong Nature Reserve is not part of Hoa Binh province, but it’s a popular addition to a Mai Chau visit, often combined as a day or two in Mai Chau followed by a day or two in Pu Luong, or even as a day trip from Mai Chau and back.
