What is Zalo?
Zalo is Vietnam’s leading messaging app, developed by the Vietnamese tech company VNG. It functions similarly to WhatsApp, WeChat, or Viber, allowing users to send messages, make voice and video calls, and even access business and government services. While it remains relatively unknown outside Vietnam, it dominates daily communication among locals.
Unlike WhatsApp, which is widely used globally, or Facebook Messenger, which is common in social interactions, Zalo is the default app for most Vietnamese people, including businesses and local government services. You’ll find many small businesses using Zalo instead of email or websites, and some official services even offer customer support through the app.
Who uses Zalo?
- Government services: Some Vietnamese government offices allow citizens to access information and services through Zalo.
- Vietnamese locals: Almost everyone in Vietnam uses Zalo for personal and professional communication.
- Businesses: Many hotels, shops, and restaurants use Zalo for inquiries and reservations.
Do I need Zalo when traveling in Vietnam?
For most short-term travelers, Zalo is not necessary. In Vietnam’s tourism industry, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are widely used and are enough to contact hotels, tour guides, and restaurants. While locals mainly use Zalo, people working in tourism almost always have WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger to communicate with foreign visitors. If you only need to book tours, contact hotels, or arrange transport, you will not need Zalo.
Why should travellers use Zalo?
While most short-term visitors won’t need Zalo, there are a few situations where it can come in handy.
1. Contacting Local Drivers & Small Businesses
Many private drivers, homestay owners, and small tour operators use Zalo instead of WhatsApp. If a driver offers to stay in touch via Zalo, it may be the easiest way to communicate with them during your trip.
2. Connecting with Locals
If you make Vietnamese friends, they will likely use Zalo instead of WhatsApp. While Facebook Messenger is also common, Zalo is more personal and trusted for locals.
3. Accessing Business & Government Services
Some businesses use Zalo instead of a website, meaning you may need Zalo to ask questions or make reservations. Some government services also provide official announcements and customer support through Zalo.
If you’re staying in Vietnam for an extended period, downloading Zalo is a smart move to stay connected.
How to download and set up Zalo
If you decide to use Zalo, setting it up is straightforward.
- Download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Sign up with your phone number. You can use an international number, but a Vietnamese SIM card makes it easier to connect with locals. Learn how to get one here: Buying a SIM Card in Vietnam
- Set up your profile by adding a name, profile picture, and optional bio.
- Add contacts using their phone number or by scanning a Zalo QR code.
- Adjust privacy settings to restrict messages from unknown contacts if needed.
