Han River: The heart of Da Nang
The Han River runs straight through the center of Da Nang, shaping the city’s layout and atmosphere. It flows from the inland mountains out to the East Sea, cutting through the urban core and creating a natural divide between the beachside and downtown areas.
Historically, the river wasn’t a major landmark in ancient times, but it became important during the Vietnam War, when Da Nang served as a U.S. military base and port. Today, the Han River is all about city life—lined with restaurants, lit-up bridges, and places to walk, eat, and relax. It’s become one of the defining features of modern Da Nang.
The river divides the city into two main areas: the eastern side with beach neighborhoods like My Khe and An Thuong, and the western side where you’ll find the city center and business districts. Several bridges span the river—each with its own design and vibe—connecting both sides. This network of bridges, including the famous Dragon Bridge, is part of why Da Nang is often called the “city of bridges.”
Best things to do at the Han River in Da Nang
The Han River is more than just a scenic waterway—it’s one of the best places in Da Nang to explore on foot, enjoy views of the city, or soak in the nightlife. From bridges and riverside cafes to cruises and dinner spots, there’s plenty to see and do along both sides of the river. Here are the top things to do at the Han River in Da Nang.
1. Walk along the River
Walking is one of the easiest and most relaxing ways to enjoy the Han River. There are paved walkways on both sides, and the most scenic stretch is between Dragon Bridge and Tran Thi Ly Bridge. At night, the bridges light up in shifting colors, and the reflections on the water make it feel especially vibrant.
You’ll also see lots of locals out walking, chatting, or relaxing by the riverside. Along the way, you’ll pass street performers, cafes, and occasional pop-up markets. It’s a great spot to slow down and take in the city atmosphere.
2. Visit the Dragon Bridge
Da Nang is known as the “city of bridges,” and the most famous of them is the Dragon Bridge. It connects the beachside and city center, and its golden dragon design has become the symbol of Da Nang.
During the day, it’s an interesting landmark to photograph. But at night, the bridge becomes a showpiece, lit up with LED lights that change color.
Pro rip: Watch the Fire Show
Every weekend, the Dragon Bridge puts on a short fire and water show. If you’re nearby on Saturday or Sunday at 9:00 PM, head to the riverbank for a front-row view. The dragon breathes fire and sprays water—short but fun, especially if you’ve never seen it before.
3. Take a river cruise
A river cruise is a popular and relaxing way to enjoy Da Nang at night. Boats glide past the bridges, and the skyline lights up in the background. Most cruises last around 45–60 minutes, and you can choose from simple sightseeing boats to more upscale dinner cruises.
Prices range from budget-friendly to mid-range, depending on the boat and extras. We’ve written a separate guide to Han River cruises here if you want to compare options.
4. Eat at riverside restaurants
Some of the best restaurants and rooftop bars in Da Nang are right along the river. You’ll find everything from street food to fine dining—often with great views. Two of the best areas are:
- Bach Dang Street (city side): trendy, upscale, and lively
- Tran Hung Dao Street (beach side): more relaxed, some hidden gems
Restaurants fill up fast after sunset, so if you’re planning dinner with a view, it’s smart to book ahead—especially on weekends.
5. Stay overnight with a view
The Han River makes a great backdrop for a hotel stay. Many hotels on both sides offer rooms with river views or balconies, especially between the Dragon and Han bridges.
If you want a city stay that feels relaxing but central, this is a great area. It’s especially nice for couples or anyone who wants to enjoy Da Nang’s riverfront vibe. Check our “Where to Stay” section below for hotel recommendations.
Is it worth staying along the Han River?
Staying along the Han River gives you easy access to some of the best parts of Da Nang’s city life—views, food, walks, and a quieter vibe than the beachfront. But it’s not the best fit for everyone, so here’s what to expect.
Pros:
- Central and walkable – You’re close to markets, bridges, river cruises, museums, and the best parts of the city for an evening stroll.
- Great evening atmosphere – The riverside lights up at night and feels cooler and calmer than the beach area.
- Convenient for short stays – It’s a good base if you’re only in Da Nang for a couple of nights and want to explore the city center.
Cons:
- No beach access – The beach is a 10–15 minute taxi ride away. In the hot summer months, this might be a deal-breaker if you want to swim or stay by the sea.
- Quieter at night – While nice for a peaceful evening, the riverfront can feel a bit empty after 10 PM, especially on weekdays.
Best for:
- Couples looking for a scenic, relaxed base
- Travelers focused on food, local culture, and riverside walks
- Short stays where you want to be near everything in the city
Recommended Hotels along the Han River:
- Brilliant Hotel – Right on the river with great service and a rooftop bar. Perfect view of Dragon Bridge.
- Hilton Da Nang – Upscale and modern with panoramic views and solid facilities.
- Avora Hotel – Affordable and central, just steps from Dragon Bridge and Bach Dang Street.
- Satya Hotel – A reliable mid-range option, walkable to most downtown sights and dining spots.
The Han River isn’t just for walking and river cruises—it’s also the main stage for fireworks in Da Nang. Several times a year, the city puts on large firework displays right over the river, with bridges, rooftops, and riverside parks offering great views.
Firework events on the Han River
Annual Firework Events:
- Tết (Lunar New Year) – One of the biggest celebrations of the year. Expect a large midnight fireworks show over the river, often with live performances and big crowds.
- Reunification Day (April 30) & National Day (September 2) – These national holidays often feature evening fireworks along the Han River.
- Western New Year (December 31) – Some years include a countdown and fireworks, especially in more tourist-heavy seasons, though not always guaranteed.
Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF)
The biggest firework event of the year is the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF), usually held from June to July. It’s a multi-week competition between international teams, with themed firework shows every weekend.
- Location: Main shows are launched from a platform on the Han River, near the Dragon Bridge.
- Viewing: You can watch for free from riverbanks, bridges, or book ticketed seating with better views.
- Tip: Arrive early—Bach Dang Street fills up fast on show nights.

Sights along the Han River (Walkable or nearby)
There’s more to the Han River than just views and cruises. Several of Da Nang’s top landmarks are located right along the river—or just a short walk away. It’s easy to combine multiple highlights into a single riverside walk, especially in the late afternoon or early evening.
Below are some of the best stops you can add to your Han River itinerary:

Son Tra Night Market
Just across the Dragon Bridge on the east (beach) side, Son Tra Night Market is a lively spot in the evening with street food, souvenirs, and a view of the lit-up bridge. It’s especially popular after the weekend fire show at Dragon Bridge.
Da Nang Cathedral
The pink-painted Da Nang Cathedral is just one block from the Han River on the west side, near Han Market. It’s a quick stop, good for a photo and a bit of local history. The location also makes it easy to pair with shopping or lunch in the area.
Da Nang Museum
Right along the river on the west side, the Da Nang Museum covers local history, culture, and wartime exhibits. It’s not very large but worth a visit if you’re staying nearby or walking the riverside path.
Da Nang Downtown (Formerly Asia Park)
Just south along the river is Da Nang Downtown, home to the iconic Sun Wheel. You’ll see this massive Ferris wheel lit up at night from most points along the river. From the top, you’ll get one of the best panoramic views of Da Nang, including the Han River itself.
