Tips for visiting Meo Vac

Make sure to prepare for your visit with these practical tips to get the most out of your time in Meo Vac.

Plan to arrive on Saturday to see the Sunday Market

The Meo Vac Market is one of the biggest highlights of the town and a must-see attraction along the Ha Giang Loop. If you have the chance, plan to arrive on Saturday afternoon or evening so you can stay the night and visit the market early the next day. Arriving late might mean missing the liveliest part, as it quiets down after 10 AM.

What to bring and wear

Meo Vac is located in the high mountains, which means the weather can be much chillier than in Hanoi, especially in the mornings and evenings. Be sure to pack warm clothing, even outside of the summer months. During winter, you’ll want to bring something extra warm for the daytime as well.

Stock up in Meo Vac Town

Although Meo Vac looks small, it’s one of the larger towns along the Ha Giang Loop. If you’re traveling by motorbike, fill up on gas here, as you’ll encounter stretches of the route with little to no services. It’s also a good idea to buy snacks, drinks, and water before leaving town, as you won’t find many shops in the more remote areas.

Getting cash at ATM

Meo Vac is one of the few places along the Ha Giang Loop with ATM machines, so it’s a good idea to withdraw cash here. Many homestays and local restaurants only accept cash, so make sure you’re stocked up before continuing your journey.

Eating in Meo Vac

Meo Vac, while along the Ha Giang Loop, remains very local. You won’t find many restaurants geared towards international tourists. The local eateries typically serve ethnic food, and you’ll often find yourself sitting on plastic chairs with locals. If you’re traveling with a guide, they’ll point you to the best spots. If you’re on your own, look for where motorbikes are parked—this is where guides often bring their guests. For the more adventurous, feel free to try any local place you spot for an authentic experience!

Meo Vac and the road to Cao Bang and the Ban Gioc Waterfall

Some travelers want to experience both Ha Giang and Cao Bang, and for good reason—these are two of the most scenic regions in all of Vietnam. Meo Vac is the most practical way to connect the two regions.

The view from Me Pja Pass Viewpoint - Seeing the 14 sharp turns of the pass carved into the mountain

Rather than completing the full Ha Giang Loop, which would require you to return to Ha Giang City and then drive back to Meo Vac, it’s more efficient to stop in Meo Vac and continue directly into Cao Bang. This way, you avoid doubling back and still get to see all the major highlights, including Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng Pass, and the H’mong King Palace.

View of Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the most beautiful natural highlights of Vietnam.

Once you enter Cao Bang, you’ll arrive in Bao Lac, a very remote and peaceful area far removed from the more developed roads of Ha Giang. The Me Pja Pass on the way to Ban Gioc Waterfall offers breathtaking views, making it a scenic highlight of the journey. It’s recommended to stay overnight in the Bao Lac area before continuing your journey to Ban Gioc Waterfall though, because it is still a considerable distance away.
