To help you make the most of your visit to Quan Ba Heaven Gate, here are the best stops to check out along the way:

1. The Top of the Pass

At the top of Quan Ba Pass, you’ll find a parking area for both motorbikes and cars, along with a small coffee shop. The weather can be chilly, so it’s a good idea to have something warm on hand. Take a break here with a hot chocolate or a Vietnamese coffee, while enjoying the stunning views of the pass and surrounding mountains.

Pro Tip: The coffee shop also has restrooms, making it a convenient spot for a quick toilet break.

2. Twin Mountain Viewpoint

As you descend towards the town of Tam Son, about halfway down the pass, you’ll find a parking area on your left (coming from Ha Giang). It may not look like much, but this is where you’ll find the stairs leading up to the viewpoint for the iconic Twin Mountains. There’s no entrance or parking fee. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views of the mountains and surrounding landscape from the small watchtower.

3. Along the road

After leaving the parking area, continue down the pass. Just a few hundred meters after the parking area there is the first sharp turn, the view opens up directly from the road. Here, you can see the Twin Mountains and the nearby village from a closer perspective. If you’re on a motorbike, you can stop for a quick photo. However, cars can’t pull over in this area due to the narrow road.

How to get there

Quan Ba Heaven Gate is located deep in northern Vietnam, in the Quan Ba District of Ha Giang Province. It’s quite far from Hanoi, but it’s well worth the journey to experience the stunning landscapes of the Ha Giang region. As part of the Ha Giang Loop, you’ll pass through Quan Ba Heaven Gate on your way to other highlights, making it an unavoidable stop on the route.

Getting to Ha Giang City

The Ha Giang Loop starts in Ha Giang City, which doesn’t have an airport or train station. However, there are several ways to reach Ha Giang City:

  • Daytime travel: Limousine buses and private cars are the most comfortable options. They offer smooth and easy transport with air conditioning and plenty of space.
  • Nighttime travel: Sleeper buses (both standard and VIP) are available. They save you travel time, allowing you to rest overnight, but they might not be suitable for everyone, as some people prefer traveling during the day.

Starting the Loop

Once you arrive in Ha Giang, you can start the loop. There are several ways to travel around, each offering a different level of adventure and comfort:

1. Driving a motorbike

For a real adventure, you can ride a motorbike yourself. It’s a great way to experience the Ha Giang Loop, but it’s recommended only if you have experience and an international driving permit (IDP). The roads can be challenging, so it’s essential to feel confident on a motorbike before embarking on this journey.

2. On the back of a motorbike (Most recommended)

If you’re looking for the adventure but want to stay safe, riding on the back of a motorbike with an experienced driver is the best option. Not only does this allow you to enjoy the sights without the stress of navigating, but the driver also knows the roads and hidden stops, acting like a guide along the way.

3. Car or jeep

For a more comfortable but less adventurous experience, you can opt for a car or jeep. The route and highlights remain the same as the motorbike or motorbike pillion option, but the ride will be smoother and more relaxed. This is a good choice for those who prefer comfort over adventure.

Other sights and stops near Quan Ba Pass

Quan Ba Heaven Gate and the Twin Mountain Viewpoint make for a quick but worthwhile stop along the Ha Giang Loop. However, Quan Ba has much more to offer if you want to dive deeper into the area. Below are some of the top sights in and around Quan Ba. If you’re interested in spending more time in the area or even staying overnight, check out our Quan Ba Travel Guide for more details.

1. Villages & markets

Quan Ba is home to several ethnic minority groups, and their villages are as much a highlight as the stunning landscapes. The most famous village is Lung Tam Village, known for its traditional weaving practices. You can watch locals create their fabrics in the traditional way, and it offers a glimpse into their unique culture.

While Lung Tam is the most popular stop, it can feel a bit touristy. If you prefer a more authentic experience, consider exploring the smaller villages scattered along the countryside roads — these are quieter and less crowded.

Another great aspect of Quan Ba is its local markets. The largest market takes place weekly in Tam Son, the main town in the district. It’s busy early in the morning, where you’ll find locals from various ethnic groups selling their goods. However, if you start your day in Ha Giang, you may be too late to catch it. There’s also a daily market in Tam Son, which is quieter but still offers a taste of the local culture. It’s busiest in the morning, but it runs through the afternoon as well, making it a nice stop if you’re passing through.

2. Lung Khuy Cave

Located just 8 km from Quan Ba Heaven Gate, Lung Khuy Cave is worth a visit if you have extra time. The road leading to the cave is scenic, winding through the mountains, and the cave itself is quite nice. There are laid-out paths with lights, making the visit easy and comfortable.

While it’s not as grand as other famous caves (especially if you plan to visit Phong Nha), it offers a nice break from driving. However, keep in mind that it requires a small detour and a bit of stair climbing, so it’s not a quick stop. You’ll need at least an hour, possibly more, depending on how long you spend inside.

3. Thach Son Than Buckwheat Flower Fields

Thach Son Buckwheat Flower fields in Ha Giang

Buckwheat flowers bloom in the right season (usually from October to December) and can be found all over the region, but Thach Son Than is one of the key areas for these beautiful flowers. While this stop is particularly popular with domestic tourists who love taking photos in the fields, it’s a beautiful sight if you’re visiting during the right time.

Some locals who maintain the fields may ask for a small fee (around 1 USD) if you wish to enter the fields for photos, but it’s not essential. If you’re not interested in the photo ops, you can still enjoy the view from a distance. The fields are picturesque, especially when the flowers are in full bloom, but this is more of a stop for those wanting to experience a popular local attraction.

Travel tips for visiting Quan Ba Pass

Dress for the weather

Even on warm days, the weather at the top of Quan Ba Pass can be much cooler. If you’re traveling by motorbike, make sure to wear something warmer or bring a windproof jacket for the drive up. If you’re in a car, keep a jacket within easy reach, as the temperature can drop when you get out to enjoy the view.

Bring some cash

There’s a small coffee shop at the top of the pass, offering a nice break from driving. You don’t have to feel obligated to buy something, but it’s a good place to relax with a Vietnamese coffee, hot chocolate, tea, or soft drinks. Keep in mind that you’ll need cash to purchase anything here, as cards aren’t typically accepted. Although the toilets aren’t strictly monitored, buying a drink will make you feel more comfortable using the facilities.

Plan a lunch stop in Tam Son

Tam Son, the small town located just down the pass, is a great place to stop for lunch. There are a few restaurants in the town, making it a good opportunity to refuel before continuing your journey. After leaving Tam Son, there won’t be any other towns along the way for a long stretch. If you arrive early and aren’t ready for lunch yet, consider exploring the area by visiting the local villages or the Lung Khuy Cave. This way, you can enjoy a more relaxed experience before heading back to the main loop.
