Itinerary

Evening: Sleeper train to Sapa
Your Sapa homestay trekking tour begins the night before departure, with an overnight journey from Hanoi to Sapa. You’ll travel on the Dream Train Express, a tourist-class sleeper train with cozy 4-berth cabins, air-conditioning, and bedding provided. The cabins are decorated in a Sapa-inspired style and there’s space under the bed for luggage storage. This comfortable night train helps you save time and arrive early in the mountains, ready to start your trek the next morning.

Arrive early at Lao Cai train station, where a minivan will transfer you to Sapa Town. Here, you can shower and safely store your luggage before having breakfast. After you’ve freshened up, your guide will brief you on the day ahead and the route you’ve chosen for the trekking tour.

Breakfast
8:30 - 9:00 AM :
Start your Sapa trek

After breakfast, begin your trek through the Muong Hoa Valley. Depending on the route you select, you’ll explore either the more popular trail or the less-visited path deeper into the valley:

Lunch

This option is ideal if it’s your first time in Sapa or if you want a good mix of nature, culture, and convenience. You’ll walk through the scenic Muong Hoa Valley and visit villages of the Black H’mong, Zay, and Red Dao minorities. The path is relatively well-trodden and easier to access, making it a comfortable choice with plenty of cultural interaction.

Choose this if you want a more remote and peaceful experience. This route takes you further down the valley to villages that see fewer tourists, like Ban Ho, home to the Tay people. It’s slightly longer and more adventurous but offers a more authentic look at rural life in Sapa.

Whichever trek you choose, the day ends at a local homestay in one of the villages. You’ll have a chance to relax, enjoy a home-cooked dinner, and spend time with your host family. Expect basic but clean facilities, warm hospitality, and a chance to see rural life up close.

Dinner

Wake up to the peaceful sounds of the village. After breakfast, you’ll continue your trek through the valley, passing more rice fields and remote corners of Sapa. The walk typically finishes in the early afternoon.

Breakfast

A car will be waiting at the endpoint of the trek to take you back to Sapa. Once in town, enjoy lunch and some rest before your evening transfer.

Lunch

You’ll be driven to Lao Cai train station for your return trip to Hanoi on the Dream Train Express, arriving the following morning.

  • All accommodation described in the itinerary
  • All meals described in the itinerary (B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Diner)
  • All transfers described in the itinerary
  • English-speaking local guide
  • Other meals and drinks not mentioned above
  • Tips for guide and driver (optional but appreciated)
  • Personal expenses (e.g. souvenirs, snacks, laundry)
  • The total trekking distance varies depending on the route, but expect to walk 8–15 km per day through valleys, rice fields, and villages. It’s a relaxed pace with plenty of scenic stops.
  • This trek is moderate, with some uneven paths and gentle climbs. It’s suitable for anyone in average physical condition. If you’re concerned about the difficulty, let us know — we can adjust the route to fit your comfort level.
  • This tour can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time is from March to May and September to November, when the weather is pleasant and the rice fields are at their most beautiful.
  • No trekking experience is needed. This tour is beginner-friendly, and your guide will support you throughout the journey.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip, and bring light layers. A rain jacket is handy during the rainy season (May–August), and warm clothes are recommended for cooler months.
  • Most homestays offer basic wifi, but it can be slow or unavailable in remote areas. A Vietnamese SIM card with data is a good idea if you want to stay connected.
  • Leave large luggage at our Sapa office before trekking. You’ll only need a small daypack with essentials for the homestay.
  • We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, or allergy-specific diets. Please let us know in advance so we can inform your host family.
  • Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, a refillable water bottle, a small towel, and any personal toiletries. A headlamp or flashlight is also useful at night in rural areas.

FAQ

Do I need special hiking gear or boots?

No technical gear is required. Regular sports shoes or walking shoes with grip are fine for these trails. If you'd like a walking stick, we can help you arrange one locally.

Can children join this tour?

Yes, this tour is family-friendly, especially if you choose the easier trekking route. We recommend discussing the best option for your child’s age and ability with us before booking.

Is altitude sickness a concern in Sapa?

Sapa is around 1,500 meters above sea level — most people don’t experience altitude sickness here. However, you might notice slightly cooler air or shortness of breath during uphill sections.

Is it possible to join this tour from somewhere other than Hanoi?

Yes, we can arrange private transfers or adjust the itinerary if you're coming from another city like Ha Giang or Ha Long. Let us know your travel plans in advance.

What happens if it rains during the trek?

The tour continues in light rain, but trails can get muddy. We recommend wearing waterproof shoes and bringing a rain jacket. In case of severe weather, the itinerary may be adjusted for safety.

Is there a toilet during the trek?

Toilets are available at village stops or homestays along the way. During the trek itself, facilities are limited — be prepared to go “bush style” if needed so it’s a good idea to bring tissues and hand sanitizer.
