Itinerary

To save travel time and enjoy a comfortable journey, you’ll take the Dream Train Express from Hanoi to Lao Cai. This tourist-class sleeper train departs at 10:00 PM and includes a 4-berth cabin with air-conditioning, clean bedding, and traditional Sapa-style decor. Luggage can be stored under the berth for convenience.

Optional transfers:
If you prefer not to take the train, other options are available:

  • VIP sleeper bus (arrives early morning in Sapa)
  • Limousine day bus with an extra night stay in Sapa
  • Private car or transfers from other destinations

Your train arrives early at Lao Cai Station, where a minivan will transfer you to Sapa town. You’ll have access to shower facilities and luggage storage before enjoying a local breakfast to get ready for your trek.

Breakfast

You’ll begin your Sapa homestay trekking tour through the scenic Muong Hoa Valley. You can choose between two trekking routes:

  • Option 1: Classic trek (Lao Chai – Ta Van – Giang Ta Chai)
This route passes through villages of the Black H’mong, Zay, and Red Dao ethnic groups. You’ll walk along quiet roads, forest trails, and terraced rice fields, with plenty of chances to meet local people.
  • Option 2: Off-the-beaten-track trek (Ta Van – Giang Ta Chai – Su Pan – Ban Ho)
A more remote option for those wanting to go deeper into the valley. You’ll visit lesser-visited villages and enjoy more untouched scenery, while still meeting ethnic communities along the way.

Lunch

Depending on your route, you’ll spend the night in either a Zay or Tay minority village. Expect simple but cozy accommodation, shared meals, and a peaceful rural atmosphere.

Dinner

After breakfast with your host family, continue your trek through more rice fields and hillside villages. The walk takes you further along the valley, surrounded by lush greenery and quiet mountain views.

Breakfast
Afternoon :
Return to Sapa

You’ll be picked up and driven back to Sapa town. After some time to freshen up, enjoy dinner, and spend the night in a comfortable hotel in town like Maison de Sapa. The exact hotel depends on availability but will offer a restful end to your trekking experience.

Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, head out by jeep, motorbike, or minivan to explore the area around Sapa. First stop is Silver Waterfall, especially beautiful during the rainy season. Then, drive up to Tram Ton Pass, Vietnam’s highest mountain pass. From here, you’ll get sweeping views over the valleys toward Binh Lu and Lai Chau.

Breakfast, Lunch

You’ll have a few hours to explore Sapa at your own pace. Visit local markets, walk to Cat Cat village, or climb Ham Rong mountain for a viewpoint over the town.

After dinner, transfer to the station for your overnight Dream Train Express journey back to Hanoi. The train departs in the evening and arrives in Hanoi the next morning, marking the end of your Sapa trekking adventure.

  • Round-trip sleeper train tickets (Hanoi – Lao Cai – Hanoi) on the Dream Train Express
  • Transfers between Lao Cai station and Sapa town
  • All accommodation described in the itinerary
  • Guided trekking tour
  • All meals as mentioned in the itinerary
  • Local guide
  • Other meals and drinks not mentioned above
  • Tips for guide and driver (optional but appreciated)
  • Personal expenses (e.g. souvenirs, snacks, laundry)
  • The trekking routes typically cover around 10–15 km per day, depending on the selected route. Distances are spread out with breaks, and you’ll be walking through villages, rice fields, and hillside trails.
  • This tour involves moderate trekking. Some sections are uneven or uphill but manageable for most active travelers. If you have concerns about the difficulty, let us know—we can adjust the route or pace to suit your needs.
  • Sapa is beautiful year-round, but the best conditions are from March to May and September to November, when the weather is dry and the rice fields are at their most scenic.
  • No prior trekking experience is needed. This tour is suitable for beginners with a reasonable fitness level and an interest in nature and culture.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip and weather-appropriate clothing. In colder months (Dec–Feb), bring warm layers. A lightweight rain jacket is useful during the rainy season.
  • Vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-specific meals can be arranged. Please let us know in advance so we can inform your homestay hosts and restaurants.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, rain gear, and a small daypack for your essentials during the trek.
  • You’ll stay one night in a local homestay in the village (simple but clean) and one night in a comfortable hotel in Sapa. We choose accommodations based on consistent quality and guest experience. Let us know if you have preferences.
  • This tour runs year-round and is available on request for your chosen dates. Early booking is recommended, especially in high season (March–May and September–November).

FAQ

What happens if it rains during the trek?

The trek still goes ahead in light rain, which can actually make the landscape more atmospheric. Bring a waterproof jacket and good footwear. In case of dangerous weather, we’ll adapt the plan for safety.

Can children join this tour?

Yes, older children who enjoy nature and walking can join. For families with young kids, we recommend the classic trekking route with shorter distances. Contact us for advice on the best fit.

Is it possible to do the tour in reverse—starting in Sapa and ending in Hanoi?

Yes, we can arrange the tour starting from Sapa if you're already in the area. Let us know your travel plans and we’ll tailor the itinerary accordingly.

Are there shops or places to buy water and snacks during the trek?

There are small shops in some villages, but we recommend bringing a refillable water bottle and a few snacks in your daypack. We’ll provide meals, and your guide can help you find extras if needed.

Will I see rice fields during the tour?

Yes, rice terraces are one of the highlights. The fields are green from May to early September, and golden just before harvest in late September to October. In the dry season, fields may be bare but the scenery is still stunning.

I just returned from the Everest Base Camp trek, and WOW! It was absolutely breathtaking. The stunning Himalayan vistas, warm Sherpa hospitality, and the sense of accomplishment made it an unforgettable journey. Highly recommended!
